Why I Love Morning Rituals (And You Should, Too!)

Waking up and getting out of your warm bed to start you day can feel almost impossible sometimes– especially now that the weather is getting colder. Having a set of morning rituals though, can help jump start your day and make getting out of bed a little more bearable. A morning that starts off smoothly is sure to turn into a good day.

Wake up at a time that is right for you. If that means waking up at 4:30 like Jennifer Aniston, than by all means! If you need some extra time though, that’s ok, too. Either way, you know your body and you know when you can realistically wake up.

Starting out the morning with a positive mindset can make a huge difference! Apparently, Oprah says, “Oh! I’m alive! Thank you!” each morning when she wakes up. This small positive statement can help keep you positive all day! If this mantra doesn’t work for you, find your own. As long as it makes you happy and is positive, it can help.

A good way to ease into your morning is by doing a handful of yoga poses. Mind Body Green suggests Child’s Pose, Cat/Cow, Downward Dog, Standing Forward Bend, and Triangle Pose (both sides). Hold each for 5 – 10 breaths. Practicing even a small amount of yoga in the morning encourages mindful breathing and helps you ease into your day. Plus, you don’t even have to get out of bed for the first two poses.

Before you beeline for your coffee or preferred caffeine, drink a glass of water. This helps wake you up and helps you to start your day off hydrated. It’s also good to eat a protein rich breakfast which will help you stay full throughout your morning and keep you from getting grumpy. (If you find yourself lacking time to make breakfast in the morning, you can make breakfast burritos, egg sandwiches, or quinoa bowls the weekend before, freeze it, and heat it up when you need it!)

Morning rituals are widely taught, but just one isn’t going to work for everybody. The ritual above is one that helps me ease into my mornings with a positive and mindful mindset, and I hope it does the same for you! Whatever your morning ritual is though, you should value the routine and carry it with you all day.
